Dispelling the myths about polyurethane

«Yellow polyurethane is better than red, and green polyurethane degrades more quickly»

That is not true. Polyurethane itself is virtually colourless; it only takes on colour with the addition of a dye. Polyurethane's actual characteristics depend on the composition of a particular brand, and the colour is added by the manufacturer to emphasize the uniqueness of its product. Our company uses various colours to indicate the hardness of our products. For more details about that see the relevant article.

«Polyurethane is toxic»
The reasons behind this myth are not entirely clear. In actual fact, polyurethane in polymerized form is an ordinary plastic that doesn't give off vapours, isn't radioactive and isn't at all harmful to your health. If you try to eat it, of course, it is unlikely to have a positive effect on your digestion, but the same can be said about rubber and plastic.

The polyurethane used by our company has passed the required certification process: it has the necessary safety and health certificate, which indicates that it complies with all health standards and is harmless to humans.

«Polyurethane suspension parts squeak loudly»

That also is not entirely true. Or it is entirely untrue — depending on your point of view. The number of comments about squeaking polyurethane parts is roughly the same as the number of comments about how quiet polyurethane is. As always, the truth lies somewhere in between.

What causes squeaks? A squeak is the result of friction between two surfaces manifested in the form of high-frequency sound waves. The smaller the objects undergoing friction, the higher the frequency of the sound they produce. From this we conclude that in our case a squeak results from dirt entering the gap between a bushing and a suspension control arm. In our installation instructions, we recommend both thoroughly removing dirt from the suspension arms and applying lubricant to both the bushing and the control arm before installation.

There is another point of importance to everyone who decides to install polyurethane bushings on his vehicle. OOO Polyurethan produces bushings for installation on vehicles already in service that have developed clearance between the bushing in the control arm. This means the sizes of our bushings have been adjusted to eliminate possible gaps and thus prevent unwanted squeaks. Of course, discussions on forums do not usually name the manufacturer whose products caused squeaking after installation. Another reason it is difficult to determine the reason for squeaks is that the qualification of the mechanic or the owner who replaces bushings on his own vehicle is questionable.

«Polyurethane is too expensive!»

This opinion is shared by those who do not know that they need polyurethane parts and why they need them.

It makes no sense to change your vehicle's suspension if it is working properly and dependably under the conditions in which you operate your vehicle. If you know what to expect from switching to "polyurethane," cost is not an issue. The price of polyurethane parts is fair for that type of product. Moreover, in our opinion the costs incurred with the switch to polyurethane silent blocks and bushings will be recuperated within a year. And some vehicle owners have found that replacing their rubber silent blocks with polyurethane simply eliminates the need to tune their suspension every three months.
